NEQ – Regent’s Place External Works
This project formed part of the external works package to the larger Regent’s Place North East Quarter Development. The ambitious proposals consisted the construction of a ‘giants causeway’ constructed in granite above a series of 1.2m deep tree pits slung beneath the existing slab.
The exiting slab was of continuous construction and following standard practice in the 1960’s, reinforcement was only provided in the top or bottom as required. Removing one span of the concrete slab would result in overstressing the bottom steel in the adjacent span.
To overcome this, a complex structural enveloping model was produced and series of steel frames were introduced and jacked in to place to manipulate the bending moment envelopes and ensure stressed remained within the reinforcement envelopes. By designing a series of goal post frames and stiff cross members, an idealised spring could be installed to mimic an elastic analysis from the 3D FEM model.
*This project was undertaken whilst at a previous practice with significant involvement from a Director at SD Structures.
