Sainsbury’s Supermarket Stanway

Sainburys in Stanway, Colchester is one of the largest in the country with a floor plan of 140 m x 70 m. The structure is predominantly a single story steel framed structure with mezzanine level for office use covering a third of the store. The roof structure comprised 8 vast glazed roof lanterns formed from cranked steels. ‘Tree’ columns were used to reduce clear spans and minimise the number of internal columns within the store for maximum flexibility.

*This project was undertaken whilst at a previous practice with significant involvement from a Director at SD Structures.
